My Story
How I came to homeschool
I did not think that I would homeschool. I was not homeschooled as a child. I grew up wanting to be a teacher so that I could work the same hours that my kids went to school.
Then I had kids of my own. Because I was passionate about education, I was browsing the best schools in Las Vegas during my pregnancy. My favorite school was a Spanish bilingual Montessori private school about 25 minutes from my house. Not only was this school too far, but it was way too expensive. It also wasn’t Christian, so it still didn’t craft the exact learning experience I wanted for my kids. I eventually realized that no school would create the perfect learning experience for my kids.
Little by little, God began to change my heart. I began to turn to homeschool as an option.
The problem was that I worked a full time job. Inflation was raging, housing prices were insane, and quitting my job to homeschool just didn’t feel possible. On a trip to my grandfather’s funeral in Arkansas, I went to church on that Sunday. That’s when divine intervention happened. I honestly can’t remember what the sermon was about. The only thing I do remember is that God told me on that Sunday that I needed to homeschool. He gave me this image of my son, like the lost sheep, being so lost and not knowing what or who to turn to for his questions. I know that as parents, we are called to teach our children in the way of the Lord. Through God’s teaching, we can teach our own kids about God and how to turn to Him for answers when we are lost.
It took several more months for me to work on my own faith journey. I probably listened to “Build a Boat” by Colton Dixen 1000 times as I was trying to trust that God had a plan for us and would make it possible for me to homeschool.
Eventually I started using the Good and the Beautiful Preschool curriculum with my son in the evenings after work. He was thriving in the one-on-one attention with me and also learning so much quicker. I eventually pulled my kids out of preschool and figured out a different childcare setup so I could homeschool at different times of the day, based on my job schedule.
As of right now, I am still working full time for a public education company and homeschooling my kids. My son is working through all our chosen Kindergarten curriculum. It is not always easy, but we have found our rhythm. I hope you join me on my journey and are also inspired to create the best education for your kids!
